The New Porsche 911 Targa 4S Takes Performance through the Roof
Power, performance, and personality have all been opened up in the 2017 Porsche 911 Targa 4S—an enhanced all-wheel-drive version of one of the marque’s most conspicuous convertibles. With a new engine, revised chassis, and customizable driving modes, the already tantalizing Targa takes it up a notch.
Porsche’s new 3-liter, twin-turbo flat-6 engine—producing 368 ft lbs of torque—unbridles another 20 horses over the previous version, with a more resonant soundtrack to match. Its emissions have been reduced as well, due to a 12-percent increase in engine efficiency. Letting loose 420 hp, the car catapults from zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds (when paired with PDK shifting and the Sport Chrono Package), a boost given in part by the improved traction from the electro-hydraulically controlled all-wheel drive. The Targa tops out at 188 mph, with a 7-speed manual transmission as its standard translation of power.
To help take the ride in stride, increased comfort and control is provided by the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) chassis (brought closer to the ground by .4 inches) and optional rear-axle steering (tightening the turning radius by 1.6 feet). When greater clearance is required, an optional electro-hydraulic-lift system in the front-axle struts elevates the front spoiler lip by 1.5 inches in 5 seconds. In addition, the optional Sport Chrono Package (with Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual driving modes) optimizes performance based on road conditions and desired driving objectives. The mode switch (newly located on the steering wheel for easy access) also includes a Sport Response Button that enables maximum acceleration for 20 seconds.
When stationary, the Targa’s roof can be opened or closed in 20 seconds at the touch of a button. The rear wraparound window automatically rises up to allow the soft top to fold behind the rear seats before sealing back in place.
Aesthetic revisions include an increased body width of 1.7 inches at the rear of the car, accentuated by an illuminated strip now connecting the two rear lights. New interior touches include an improved Porsche Communication and Management (PCM) system with navigation features and entertainment amenities—all accessed by a 7-inch touchscreen display at the center console.
