These people have made our daily lives much easier. But do you know who they are?
We
all know the names of inventors throughout history – from Alexander
Graham Bell (he invented the telephone) to Mark Zuckerberg (the man
behind social network site Facebook) – but countless others have also
contributed groundbreaking ideas to science and technology. You may not
have heard of them yet but here are five other inventors whose
innovations have improved our lives in various ways.
The first personal computer

Mary
Allen Wilkes is a computer programmer who famously built her own
computer at home in 1965, becoming the first home user in history. Her
biggest individual contribution however was creating the world’s first
operating system – laying the foundations for the modern personal
computer.
The handphone
In
1973, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper used the technology of the
police radio and applied it to the technology of the day to make the
first working portable mobile phone. The phone, which weighed 1kg, had a
talk time of 20 minutes and required 10 hours to recharge but it give
way to the modern mobile devices, which we can’t do without today. For
his pioneering efforts, Cooper has been nicknamed “the father of the
cellphone”.
The digital camera
You
could say he was the man who made selfies possible. Steven Sasson
invented the first digital camera in 1975. His camera weighed 8 pounds
(3.6 kg) and only recorded 0.01 megapixels in black and white. Digital
cameras have rapidly improved since then: Digital photography has made
it easy for everyone to capture their lives with the smartphones,
without the hassle of developing negatives.
iPod
British
newspaper The Guardian called Jonathan Ive “the inventor of the
decade”. Not surprising, he designed the iPod – Apple’s best-selling MP3
device that changed the way people listened to music. The iPod was an
instant success when it appeared in 2001. Unlike other digital players,
the iPod was slick looking and gave you access to music in just a
couple of clicks of its navigation wheel.
The
chief design officer of Apple Inc, Ive also oversaw the design of the
MacBook Pro, iMac, MacBook Air, iPhone, iPad and the Apple Watch.
Skype
It
made its first appearance in 2003 and was the brainchild of Estonian
programmers Priit Kasesalu and Jaan Tallin. The telecommunications
business may not be fond of these two but Skype has transformed the way
people in different countries communicate. After all, overseas phone
calls used to be expensive but Skype made it possible for users to
connect with their friends and family, for free over WiFi.
